Ever since this book came out in 2010 I’ve been intrigued by both the cover and the blurb. I finally managed to get ahold of it in WHSmith (when I may or may not have bought a bunch of books that I’ve been dying to read including The Infinite Sea and Isla and the Happily Ever After) and I read it in one night. Don’t worry I am quite a fast reader and a lot of people tell me that they believe I just skim and don’t fully take anything in but I honestly don’t I promise you ^^ I’ve been tested by someone after having read one page and I could practically tell them word-for-word what happened on it 😛
If you’re interested in this beautiful book (which I highly recommend) but you need a bit more convincing then here is a summary of it with no spoilers :3:
Cassia has always trusted the Society to make the right choices for her: what to read, what to watch, what to believe. So when Xander’s face appears on-screen at her Matching ceremony, Cassia knows with complete certainty that he is her ideal mate… until she sees Ky Markham’s face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black.
The Society tells her it’s a glitch, a rare malfunction, and that she should focus on the happy life she’s destined to lead with Xander. But Cassia can’t stop thinking about Ky, and as they slowly fall in love, Cassia begins to doubt the Society’s infallibility and is faced with an impossible choice: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she’s known and a path that no one else has dared to follow.
Now…I’m going to do a bit of spoiling now so if you don’t want to ruin the experience for you, run to your nearest book place…buy the book, read it and then come back and share your opinion on it ^^
Now see I don’t really want to compare this to the Delirium Series but I find the concepts to be so similar that I’m finding it hard to not. The idea of there being a higher power controlling the city and restricting their ability to hear music and choosing the people they are going to end up with…I mean I know it’s not exactly the same thing but I sort of got that feeling while I was reading. Also Alex and Kay seemed such similar characters to me (though honestly I preferred Kay *don’t murder me*).
ANYWAYS back to the review of Matched. I first off loved the cover and the overall colour scheme of it. I can’t wait to get ahold of the other books to complete the series cause they’re so gorgeous. I loved the writing style and the characters and the creation of this new world. I felt a little bit upset that we didn’t get a more developed background or understanding to how we as humans have ended up like this. I also felt weird that the other countries were just referred to as “Countries” as if they are cut off from the world like in Legend.
When we were first introduced to Xander I thought he was perfect. I thought he was going to be the one that Cassia falls in love with and that it was all a terrible mistake and she was going to switch to someone else. I also thought from the back of the book that she was going to end up with someone who was sort of like a bad-boy type and that would have spiced the whole story up and she was going to fall in love with him etc. but no it was quite a sad story between Cassia and Xander. Their friendship was just ruined by being matched together. Also as soon as Kay and Cassia had that moment on the hill with the writing I fell in love with Kay. It was so beautiful.
Cassia’s family in general are perfect. They’re so sweet and the genuine love between all of the members is so beautiful. I thought it was such a beautiful moment when Cassia looked at her parents and realized her father would break the rules for the people that he loves and her mother would follow the rules for those same people. Either way they both cared about her so much and when they saw how much she loved Kay they decided they would risk everything for her.
The taking away of the artefacts was such a sad scene especially between Bram and Cassia because you could tell how heartbroken Bram was. But when Cassia chose to save Kay’s artefact over her own I almost cried cause it was so sweet.
The Officials are really creepy though and I’m trying to decide if they’re genuinely being honest by saying her whole relationship between Kay was organized by them or if they’re just trying to cover something else which is much bigger then even they can understand. I also found it weird that Cassia and Xander had to have an official follow them to their “dinner date” because obviously they’ve been hanging out together their whole lives so why would they need an official with them.
Overall this book in general is so well written and developed. I loved the discovery of how all the different pills worked and how it sometimes doesn’t work on some people like Kay and Xander. But in general I can’t wait to discover how Cassia is going to find Kay and unravel this surprisingly strong force that is controlling them and everyone they care about.
Plot: 8 points
Language/Style: 8 points
Originality: 7 points
Characters: 9 points
So in total I give this book 32 points out of 40 points which is actually a higher score then I thought it was going to get but there you go ^^ obviously it must be good then 😛
Favorite Part: “Every minute you spend with someone gives them a part of your life and takes part of theirs.”
